This course will discuss the entities that present on the gingiva from nodules to desquamative gingivitis to gingival leukoplakia and the new concepts regarding leukoplakia. It will discuss in detail when and where to obtain biopsies, whether biopsies need special handling such as for immunofluorescence studies, and how to treat inflammatory conditions using a custom-tray, as well as the best treatment ladder for inflammatory conditions. This includes when and what blood tests to order and what medications to prescribe whether topical or systemic.
Educational Objectives:
- Recognize the difference between inflammatory and pre-neoplastic and neoplastic gingival conditions.
- Identify when a lesion will require direct immunofluorescence studies.
- Manage patients with inflammatory gingival disease using topical medications.
- Evaluate the rationale for treating gingival leukoplakia with topical immunotherapy or chemotherapy.
