Workshop participants will hear from other educators in their field discuss how each of their programs teach collaborative care and manage the referral process at their institution. This discussion will include how referrals are addressed didactically and clinically within different educational models, how referrals are completed, and criteria used to teach and determine what cases to refer. Programs will receive ideas on how to develop a referral guide that is tailored to their program needs.
Educational Objectives:
- Examine how different types of predoctoral programs handle referrals.
- Identify effective methods of communication and referral between the dentist and the specialist.
- Develop a referral guide that can used as a building block for each institution.
- Review the requirements for graduation reported in a recent survey.
The American Academy of Periodontology designates this activity for 1.5 continuing education credits.

Dr. Dwayne Karateew, Chair of the Postdoctoral Program Directors Committee, will moderate the event and be accompanied by four panelists that will discuss new approaches on how to select the best students, outline essential elements of the selection process using examples of best practices, and the risks of standardized testing.
Educational Objectives:
- Explain the reasoning behind the trend of moving away from GPAs and class ranks.
- Explore why standardized examinations have built in biases.
- Discuss how class rankings can lead to negative emotions within the undergraduate student bodies, potentially impacting which students apply for residencies.
- Determine which alternative “non-traditional” metrics will be most useful to select the best candidates and future periodontists.
- Develop new resident selection strategies to incorporate in postdoctoral periodontal programs.
